Abstract figurative

Abstract figurative is a term describing a synthesis of abstraction and figuration in art – the creation of any art piece that combines Abstract art and Figurative art, bringing together two opposing styles by taking strong references to the real world and synthesizing them with departures from reality.
However, many would say that art does just this, and that "abstract figurative" is a contradiction in terms.

My parents house has really old wooden doors, and you can see the pattern of the wood coming through the varnish. When I was younger, I would make out images in the effect, and most commonly found figurative representaions of faces, similar to 'The Scream' by Edvard Munch.

Why is it that often when faced with the abstract, people look for the figurative, as an element of cultural understanding, or more simply, to find the familular, as a process which aids understanding and rational interpritation?
