I wonder what would happen if you held an exhibition without alcohol. Would the prospect of staring soberly at walls covered in artwork keep many people away? What do people want more from an exhibition opening, art or alcohol? Take for instance two hypothetical rooms in a building that are situated next to one another with two doors:-
Door One:- A white room which contained art.
Door Two:- A white room filled with alcohol.
Imagine now thirty art students entered the building. Which room would they remain in longest? I would spend more time in the room filled with alcohol, I know I would, and I would phone more people to come. I do not know if I would do that with regards to art. Yet I say that my passion is art. However people can passionately talk about art, sell art, buy art, write about art, all manner of things which are abstract from the creation of it. Is the artist important for anything more than the stimulation of the artistic community and those who claim to inhabit and populate it? Is it perhaps that alcohol is a more universally sociable thing than art. I'll do some research at GI which has free booze and I expect some art.
